Levees Spell Double Trouble for Delta Dwellers

The Delta's waterways are deceptively tranquil - when the air is warm, the winds have died and the water is velvet-smooth. But the waters below the surface are constantly in motion, eroding the levees. And even in summertime they breach the dikes, as seen in July on Wheeler Island and last summer on Jones Tract.

Big Plans Coming to River City

The times they are a changin' - especially on the Sacramento riverfront. Little happened in River City after the waterfront bustled for 80 years, starting during the Gold Rush with steamboats and river traffic. Since the mid-1900s, commerce largely abandoned the waterway to recreational uses and the wharf sides fell silent after World War II.
