Dana Point Harbor Receives State's OK for Maintenance Dredging

DANA POINT - The Dana Point Harbor Department received approval from the California Coastal Commission to move forward with maintenance dredging in the harbor, at the commission's Dec. 12 meeting. The move will allow removal of sand and silt that has accumulated, causing significant shoaling and affecting navigation within the harbor. The commission approved the harbor's Notice of Intent to issue a permit allowing the Dana Point Harbor Department to begin the project, which will place clean dredged sand on Baby Beach and Capistrano Beach.

Queen Mary to get $6 Million Refit

LONG BEACH - Plans for renovating the city's iconic Queen Mary were revealed by its new operators at a meeting Nov. 7. The development group Save the Queen paid $43 million to purchase the ship's lease from Queen's Seaport Development Inc., along with the rights to develop the adjacent land, with city approval. The Illinois-based Hostmark Hospitality Group will operate the Queen Mary hotel and onboard attractions. Save the Queen plans to invest $6 million to renovate and maintain the 71-year-old retired cruise ship over the next 18 months. Technology upgrades, hotel room renovations and a kitchen modernization top the priority list of improvements.

Boat owners who dock their vessels at marinas within Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties may have noticed a strange substance covering their boat hulls. Grayish-white ash from the wildfires that whipped through Southern California three weeks ago has been a common sight on many boats - and it cannot be completely removed with a simple rinse. While the powdery coating of ash may look as if it could simply be brushed off hull surfaces, that is not the case, Southern California boat cleaning experts told The Log. The reason? The ash contains more than just burned wood: It contains a long list of other materials, some of which are toxins.

Santa Barbara Officials Discuss Marina 1 Reconstruction Plans

SANTA BARBARA - With Phase 1 of a multiphase reconstruction plan for Marina 1 scheduled to begin in mid-2008, the public has been invited to listen to and comment on construction design plans. On Nov. 1, the Waterfront Department held the second in a series of planned public meetings that included members from the Santa Barbara Harbor Commission to discuss the project. Dave Connors, a representative from the design firm Cash and Associates, retained to create and help implement the design plan for the complete reconstruction of the 37-year old marina, presented the conceptual design for Phase 1. While aggressive maintenance on the part of the harbor facilities staff has kept the marina in good working order, the aging marina is in need of replacement.
