The Log's Publisher Honored With Good Sea Scout Award

11/1/2007

NEWPORT BEACH - Publisher and boat show producer Duncan McIntosh received the inaugural Good Sea Scout Award from the Orange County Sea Scouts at a marine industry luncheon Oct. 23 that raised more than $20,000 for the Newport Sea Base. Mayor Steve Rosansky presented McIntosh with the award on behalf of the Sea Scouts, and then surprised him by officially proclaiming Oct. 23 "Duncan McIntosh Day" in the city of Newport Beach. More than 100 people attended the event at Balboa Yacht Club. McIntosh - who, with his business partner and wife, Teresa McIntosh, is co-publisher of Sea Magazine, Go Boating Magazine and The Log Newspaper; and co-producer of the Newport Boat Show, Lido Yacht Expo and Marina del Rey Boat Show - was honored for exemplifying the ideals of the Sea Scouts program in his daily life and serving as an excellent role model.

NEWPORT BEACH - Costa Mesa-area children who live at a local motel received a once-in-a-lifetime experience to sail - many boarding boats for the first time - when Balboa Yacht Club offered a unique community outreach program Sept. 8. Unlike some other youngsters who spend their summers on a boat or at the beach, many of the 20 youths who call the Costa Mesa Motor Inn on Harbor Boulevard their home had never been off dry land until they were invited to sail through the harbor with Balboa YC members. "They were very responsive and had a great time," said Alan Oleson, chairman of community affairs for Balboa YC.

Scouts Turn 100

8/23/2007

Orange County Scouts celebrated the 100th anniversary of Scouting with a sunrise ceremony at Dana Point's Doheny State Beach. Scouts blew a kudu horn like the one used to summon boys to the first camp on Aug. 1, 1907 at England's Brownsea Island, by founder Robert Baden-Powell. Two packs and three Scout troops were present for the Dana Point ceremony, which included Sea Scouts.
