Wave Power Promises Alternative Energy Source

With fuel prices rising, it's no wonder that many boaters wish for a cheap and endless source of energy. Scientists say we may be floating on the answer: wave power. A Florida company, SRI International, is already working on capturing this relatively untapped alternative energy source, and initial results seem promising, according to Roy Kornbluh, senior research engineer. SRI International has harnessed the inertia of a buoy as it sways side-to-side, internally stretching what the company refers to as an artificial muscle. The small-scale research buoy has successfully generated enough power to sustain the buoy's external navigation light.

Predicted Log Contests Present Unforseen Challenges

At the September 16 Shore-line Invitational Cruiser Naviga-tion contest, veteran predicted logger Tom Collins posted a low 0.549 percent handicapped error in his checkpoint predicted passage times to win this year's Shoreline Trophy in the race from Long Beach to the Isthmus. The start was at Oil Island White, inside the Long Beach breakwater.

Powerboat Race Brings Thrills and Spills to Huntington Beach

The eighth annual Offshore Grand Prix powerboat race August 27 brought high-speed thrills and some tense moments to the water off Huntington Beach. Eight exceedingly fast powerboats thundered along the coast south from Sunset Beach on a roughly five-mile course.
