Private Six-Pack Charters Offer Selection
By Capt. David Bacon In addition to the fleet of large sportboats, many smaller charter vessels operate out of Southern California's harbors. These boats, commonly known as "six-packs," are licensed to carry a maximum of six passengers. Although fishing aboard these boats is generally more expensive than fishing aboard bigger boats, it also offers many advantages to certain types of anglers. Here veteran six-pack captain David Bacon discusses what six-packs have to offer. READ MORE...

World's Finest Fleet Offers Many Options
There's no arguing about the fact that Southern California's sportfishing fleet is the finest in the world. Some 165 boats, ranging in length from around 40-foot dayboats to the 124-foot Excel, depart from 24 sportfishing landings between San Diego and Avila Beach to take around 700,000 anglers per year to catch millions of fish. Protecting Waters Of Channel Islands:NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Serves From Channel Islands Harbor
Have you ever seen a nudibranch or even heard of one? Did you know that the largest creature on earth, whose tongue outweighs many cars, swims in Southern California waters?
If you've never come face-to-face with a garibaldi, face-to-nose with an elephant seal, or face-to-flipper with a dolphin or sea lion, mark NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary as a place to visit.
Since 1999, the sanctuary has operated a Ventura County office in the Channel Islands Harbor. According to sanctuary officials: "Since the resources are located off both Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, we are very pleased to offer outreach and education to both counties. READ MORE...

- Albacore The Great Migrators
By Zack Thomas Arguably Southern California's most sought-after gamefish, the albacore can also be one of the most elusive. Some years - like last year - they migrate in huge numbers into waters within 100 miles of most SoCal ports, while other years they may never come within range of private boats or one-day sportboat. - Calico Bass Saltwater Finesse Fish
By Capt. David Bacon Calico bass are caught throughout wild boiler rock environments, inshore kelp forests, and over shallow reefs. Calicos are a year-round fishery, and catching them consistently requires some finesse - except when they go on a feeding rampage and pounce on everything you throw in the water. READ MORE...
- California Barracuda Coastal Torpedos
By Capt. David Bacon Barracuda can make a boring day fun! They slash-attack a bait or lure, hook up aggressively, and fight well on light tackle. They also taste pretty good, if cared for properly. READ MORE...
- California Halibut Enigmatic Flatfish
By Capt. David Bacon California halibut are some of the most challenging and sought-after of SoCal's game fish. Rarely targeted by sportboats because of the somewhat specialized techniques required, they are nonetheless caught incidentally by sportboat anglers fishing for other species. They are also a favorite quarry for private boaters. READ MORE...
- California Yellowtail Masked Marauders
By Capt. David Bacon With its tackle-busting runs and delicious fillets, the yellowtail is one of California's premier gamefish. Although yellows are seasonal to some degree, they're much less so than the tunas. READ MORE...
- Lingcod A Big Mouth and a Bad Attitude
By Capt. David Bacon There is nothing subtle about a lingcod attack. Even at a few hundred feet down and with several feet of stretch in monofilament line, a lingcod can bend a rod double, muscle its way into the rocks, bust off the line, and leave one very perplexed angler wondering what the heck just happened. READ MORE...
- Ocean Whitefish "Bottom Yellowtail"
By Capt. David Bacon The characteristics of ocean whitefish give anglers plenty to smile about, especially during wintertime rockfish and lingcod closures. They school up, which makes it possible to catch a bunch of them in a productive area; they're feisty fighters, which makes catching them fun; and they yield large and delicious fillets, which pleases the palate at home. READ MORE...
- Rockfish Colorful and Tasty
By Capt. David Bacon The many species of rockfish inhabiting SoCal waters are delicious and relatively easy to find, and limit-style fishing is common aboard both commercial and private boats. Although enthusiasts often use specialized tackle and techniques for rockfish, they can also be taken on fairly standard rigs by fishermen of every skill level. READ MORE...

By Capt. David Bacon These critters ain't pretty. These critters ain't graceful. These critters ain't huge, and they won't give you a tackle-testing fight. But they are plentiful, give a decent accounting of themselves on light tackle, and taste much better than they look. READ MORE...
- The Other Tunas Bluefin, Yellowfin, Bigeye
By Zack Thomas The elusive bluefin - biggest of all the tunas - puts in an occasional appearance in SoCal waters. Bluefins are uncommon enough that few skippers, private or commercial, target them specifically. Rather, they are generally taken incidentally by albacore fishermen. READ MORE...
- Thresher Sharks Who's Got Who?
By Capt. David Bacon The shape of a shark in the water strikes a primordial chord in our breasts. We instinctively know our relative position in the food chain. - White Seabass Magnificent Croaker
By Capt. David Bacon Seabass have come back in force since the late 1980s and early 1990s, when concern over declining populations led to more active management, including stricter commercial regulations, decreased bag limits, minimum size limits, and implementation of remarkably successful "grow-out" operations. A Boater's Dream: Southern California's Dana Point Harbor
Dana Point is known today as one of the most beautiful recreational harbors on the West Coast. The rugged cove, known in the days of the square-rigged sailing ships as Bahia Capistrano, was the major port between San Diego and Santa Barbara.
Richard Henry Dana Jr. described Dana Point as "the only romantic spot on the coast." The author of the classic sea journal Two Years before the Mast landed here during the hide-trading days of the 1830s and described the charm of the steep-cliff cove in his renowned book. READ MORE...

Baja Sportfishing Guide: Among Baja's Boats, Panga Is Old Standby
By Zack Thomas Most Baja fishing takes place in different boats from those familiar to American fishermen. The old standby is the panga - an open, roughly finished, outboard-powered fiberglass skiff. Shelter Island Hosts Three America's Cups
As Shelter Island celebrates its 50th anniversary, the most noted events are the three America's Cup competitions. As countries all over the world invested billions and their top sailors to champion the mug, Shelter Island has enjoyed the honor of hosting the event not once, or twice, but three times. The events brought international competitors, media and celebrities to this magic island and to San Diego. Controversies, a sinking, a lost keel, personalities, celebrities, and syndicates all put Shelter Island in the limelight for years. As the jet set partied, San Diego's hotels, restaurants, boatyards, and marinas all reaped a financial windfall, pumping millions into the local economy. Shelter Island Drive was transformed.
